Effects of predation risk and plant resistance on Manduca sexta caterpillar feeding behaviour and physiology

چکیده
1. Because predation risk typically alters how prey forage for food, interactions between predation risk and food availability are commonly found. Less is known about how host plant quality and predation risk interact to affect prey behaviour and physiology. 2. Using the caterpillar, Manduca sexta , and its predator, Podisus maculiventris , the effects of predation risk and host plant quality on caterpillar feeding, growth, assimilation efficiency, and resting metabolic rate were tested. 3. Overall, caterpillars on low-resistance tomato plants (jasmonate-insensitive) gained 14% more mass than caterpillars on high-resistance plants (wild-type tomato). On low-resistance plants, the presence of predators caused caterpillars to eat 32% less, but they gained the same mass as unthreatened caterpillars (i.e. a 19% increase in assimilation efficiency). In addition, caterpillars showed a 17% increase in resting metabolic rate in the presence of predators. On high-resistance plants, predation risk caused a decrease in feeding, but did not alter assimilation efficiency or resting metabolic rate. 4. The reduction in physiological responses to predation risk on highversus lowresistance plants demonstrates a tradeoff between the ability to respond to predation risk and the ability to grow, especially on well-defended plants.

The parasitic wasp Cotesia congregata uses multiple mechanisms to control host (Manduca sexta) behaviour.
Some parasites alter the behaviour of their hosts. The larvae of the parasitic wasp Cotesia congregata develop within the body of the caterpillar Manduca sexta During the initial phase of wasp development, the host's behaviour remains unchanged. However, once the wasps begin to scrape their way out of the caterpillar, the caterpillar host stops feeding and moving spontaneously. We found that th...
متن کاملHow do inositol and glucose modulate feeding in Manduca sexta caterpillars?
Many species of caterpillar possess taste cells that respond exceptionally vigorously to the sugar alcohol myo-inositol. We examined the functional significance of these inositol-sensitive taste cells in Manduca sexta caterpillars through an integrated series of electrophysiological and behavioral studies. Neural recordings from all the gustatory chemosensilla revealed that M. sexta have only t...
متن کاملPlant Defenses and Predation Risk Differentially Shape Patterns of Consumption, Growth, and Digestive Efficiency in a Guild of Leaf-Chewing Insects
Herbivores are squeezed between the two omnipresent threats of variable food quality and natural enemy attack, but these two factors are not independent of one another. The mechanisms by which organisms navigate the dual challenges of foraging while avoiding predation are poorly understood. We tested the effects of plant defense and predation risk on herbivory in an assemblage of leaf-chewing i...
متن کاملMolecular interactions between the specialist herbivore Manduca sexta (Lepidoptera, Sphingidae) and its natural host Nicotiana attenuata. II. Accumulation of plant mRNAs in response to insect-derived cues.
The transcriptional changes in Nicotiana attenuata Torr. ex Wats. elicited by attack from Manduca sexta larvae were previously characterized by mRNA differential display (D. Hermsmeier, U. Schittko, I.T. Baldwin [2001] Plant Physiol 125: 683-700). Because herbivore attack causes wounding, we disentangled wound-induced changes from those elicited by M. sexta oral secretions and regurgitant (R) w...
متن کاملThe hungry caterpillar: an analysis of how carbohydrates stimulate feeding in Manduca sexta.
In most insects, the taste of carbohydrates stimulates an immediate appetitive response. The caterpillar of Manduca sexta is an exception to this general pattern. Despite eliciting a strong peripheral gustatory response, high concentrations of carbohydrates (e.g. glucose or inositol) stimulate the same intensity of biting as water during 2-min tests. We suspected that the lack of feeding stimul...
